As we enter Ennis, we’ll approach US 287. Montana 287 has kind of a weird history- it first came into effect in about 1960 along the alignment of US 287. In 1962, the current stretch of 287 north of Ennis was designated as 287A and this stretch of road (then Montana 34), then following MT 41 and MT 55 was designated as US 287. When US 287 was commissioned in 1965, this road remained MT 287. Presumably, Montana 287 was Montana’s preferred routing for US 287.
