Question?

Does the home team decide whether or not the DH rule is used in the game?  Teams such as the Twins or the Rockies could really benefit from this where as teams such as Boston or Cleveland could really be at a disadvantage.  Now I don't expect this to ever actually come up in a game, however isn't it the duty of an organization to find the best way possible to win every game?  It seems odd that no one would have tried to exercise this.

American League vs. American League games by default have a DH

A team can choose to forfeit it for themselves but that has no impact on the other team

Well technically, if it were an AL team, you could DH for another position besides the pitcher

it’s just that no one would ever bring a hitter up to the major leagues who couldn’t at least hit better than a pitcher

since the pitchers are usually the best players and coaches often DH for another position.

by seattlebruin on Apr 28, 2008 3:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It does in HS

in MLB rule 6.10b

The Rule provides as follows:
A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game. A Designated Hitter for the pitcher must be selected prior to the game and must be included in the lineup cards presented to the Umpire in Chief.
The designated hitter named in the starting lineup must come to bat at least one time, unless the opposing club changes pitchers.
It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that game.

Determined, Jonesing Commentor

by I'm NOT Corco on Apr 28, 2008 4:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This says NOTHING about it being a league rule

The Rule provides as follows:
A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game. A Designated Hitter for the pitcher must be selected prior to the game and must be included in the lineup cards presented to the Umpire in Chief.
The designated hitter named in the starting lineup must come to bat at least one time, unless the opposing club changes pitchers.
It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that game.

by F'nA's on Apr 28, 2008 4:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What

“It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that game.”

This does not apply to both teams. It only applies to the team that forgot their DH. I think Hargrove managed it at some point.

By taking out their DH, yes that gives you a strategic advantage. A team would have to be incredibly moronic to manage that.

You can’t force the other team to not use their DH, as you seem to believe, they must do it to themselves if it is to happen.

....the tennis racket swipes it out, the ball is picked up by the pit crew chief, and he runs it back for match point!

the away team changed the rules in the opposite fixture such that this game would be played with home/away roles switched!

The intrigue!

by Graham on Apr 28, 2008 4:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You're such a moron.

It’s clear that the HOME TEAM is the one that gets to make/change the rules. I mean, how do you not know that.

But the home team defined the away team as the home team

right before they changed the rules, in a cunning attempt to have the home team change the rules in the way the away team wanted in the first place.

Please don’t insult my intelligence, asking for specific written information about it isn’t stupid. And besides if you cannot discuss a question (that wasn’t meant to be serious in the first place) without insulting me then you are not worth my time. It wasn't the initial question that was the problem

as much as it is the constant follow-ups about how teams can change, ignore, or decide what rules to use at their discretion. And then the not-letting-it-go-when-you-realized-it-was-absurdness. At that point, all bets are off re: politeness.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Apr 28, 2008 5:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly

It’s that kind of pigheaded refusal to admit mistakes that the LL readership feeds off of.

The original question wasn’t thought out very well, that’s fine. We all have brain farts from time to time, but continually insisting that the question wasn’t stupid (when it obviously was) just to save face is inviting ridicule.

The proper way to deal with saying something stupid is to say “Wow, don’t know what I was thinking with that question, sorry about that”. Then nobody will make fun of you too much.
