Montana Secondary Highway 556, US-2 to MT-200

AMP: 44

Location: Thompson River Rd and US-2, Flathead Cty

Reassurance shield as S-556 begins. 556 is unpaved for its entire length, but fairly scenic.

AMP: 37

Location: Thompson River Rd and Plum Creek Rd, Flathead Cty

This is really kind of an odd highway, in that it’s mostly been bypassed by a private road maintained by Plum Creek, that allows public access. With the exception of this small segment about seven miles south of US-2, they’ll run on separate, parallel rights of way.

Keep right here to continue on S-556, as we leave the private Plum Creek Rd and join the Sanders County road.

AMP: 32

Location: Thompson River Rd and Plum Creek Rd, Sanders Cty

The county road mostly very closely parallels Plum Creek’s privately maintained but publicly accessible road, leaving this road to a state of more disrepair.

A couple miles later, we’ll cross the Plum Creek road.

AMP: 4

Location: Thompson River Rd and Forest Rd, Sanders Cty

Several miles later, pavement begins on the county/state road. At this point, Plum Creek’s road is on the other side of the Thompson River.

Shortly after that, we’ll approach MT-200, which has no signs due to construction. Follow 200 west to Thompson Falls and 200 east to Plains.
